Confessions of a Leaner

by Mike Basarich, Saris Manager of Cycling Infrastructure

I'll admit it. I used to be a "leaner." From my childhood home and college dormitory, to the myriad apartments and even my first house, nothing stopped me from leaning my bike up against things. In hallways and vestibules, to basements, porches and garages, I propped my bike up indiscriminately. I leaned my bike against cars, walls, couches, tables, doors, railings, trash cans, dehumidifiers, and even dog crates (sorry Cooper).

This was due in equal parts to ignorance and laziness. My ignorance was that I was unaware that there exists a whole category of indoor bicycle storage products available to fit any space or aesthetic. My laziness was that I never asked my landlords to provide bike parking in my various apartment buildings over the years.

But I'm here to tell you that you don't have to make the same mistakes I did. Today bike storage is easy and accessible to everyone, regardless of space or budget constraints. From simple yet effective bike stands that stabilize the rear wheel to truly innovative space-saving bike storage like the Cycle Glide or Hottie. Don't let the end of your handlebar and gravity be the only things between you and dented or scratched walls.

And stop thinking that carrying your bike up multiple flights of stairs is acceptable. The new normal is safely locking your bike in a convenient location. Create a bike garage for you and your neighbors with our commercial bike parking products. With Saris indoor parking solutions, you can turn any space into premier bicycle storage. Storage that can be vertical or horizontal, but always supported. Leaning is an ugly habit that can multiply exponentially. It only takes one.

But just because you're a leaner today, doesn't mean you have to be a leaner tomorrow. There are better ways, and I assure you better days ahead. I'm proof that you don't have to accept chipped paint, scuffed saddles, and bent shifters. Rack your bike and walk away assured knowing that there is more supporting your bike than rubber and crossed fingers.
